Sediment Cores

Sediment cores are cylindrical samples of layered sediment collected from lakes, rivers, wetlands, coastal zones, or the seafloor, providing a physical record of environmental conditions through time. As particles settle and accumulate, successive layers become buried and preserve materials such as minerals, organic matter, pollen, microorganisms, and chemical signatures; researchers analyze stratigraphy and date selected horizons to reconstruct the sequence of past change. In environmental research, sediment cores help reveal pollution histories, climate variability, erosion, habitat shifts, and ecosystem responses to human activity. They also support baseline assessments and improve predictions of future environmental change.

An extrusion method using a calibrated threaded-rod is presented, which allows for mm scale subsampling of aquatic sediment cores. Millimeter-scale sampling is necessary to fully characterize recent event stratigraphy in sediment records.

Estimating Sediment Denitrification Rates Using Cores and N2O Microsensors

This method estimates sediment denitrification rates in sediment cores using the acetylene inhibition technique and microsensor measurements of the accumulated N2O. The protocol describes procedures for collecting the cores, calibrating the sensors, performing the acetylene inhibition, measuring the N2O accumulation, and calculating the denitrification rate.

Source: Laboratory of Jeff Salacup - University of Massachusetts Amherst Every lab needs standards that track the performance, accuracy, and precision of its instruments over time to ensure a measurement made today is the same as a measurement made a year from now (Figure 1). Because standards must test the performance of instruments over a long period of time, large volumes of the standards are often required. Many chemical standards can be purchased from retail scientific companies, like...

2014

Lake eutrophication is a water quality issue worldwide, making the need to identify and control nutrient sources critical. Laboratory determination of phosphorus release rates from sediment cores is a valuable approach for determining the role of internal phosphorus loading and guiding management decisions.
