Interactional Fairness

Interactional fairness is the perceived quality of interpersonal treatment and information people receive during decisions, procedures, or exchanges, and it matters because respectful communication can shape whether outcomes are viewed as legitimate. It operates when decision makers communicate honestly, provide timely and adequate explanations, acknowledge affected individuals’ concerns, and treat them with dignity, even when financial outcomes are unfavorable. In finance, the concept helps assess interactions surrounding lending, investment advice, debt collection, customer service, and automated credit decisions, where transparency and respectful communication can influence trust, acceptance, complaint behavior, and institutional relationships.
