Cpg Islands

CpG islands are DNA regions enriched in cytosine-guanine dinucleotides, often located near gene promoters, where they help regulate whether genes are expressed. Their activity depends partly on DNA methylation: adding methyl groups to cytosine residues can alter chromatin structure and limit access to transcriptional machinery, while unmethylated islands generally support transcription. In genetics, analyzing CpG island methylation helps researchers study epigenetic regulation, genomic imprinting, development, and cell-type-specific gene activity. Abnormal methylation patterns can also silence tumor-suppressor genes or disrupt normal gene control, making CpG islands valuable markers in disease research and potential targets for diagnostic and therapeutic studies.
