5-fluorocytosine

5-Fluorocytosine is a synthetic fluorinated pyrimidine antifungal drug that targets certain yeasts and matters because it provides an oral option for treating serious fungal infections. After entering susceptible fungal cells, cytosine deaminase converts 5-fluorocytosine into 5-fluorouracil, whose metabolites disrupt DNA synthesis and impair RNA and protein production. Clinicians commonly combine it with amphotericin B for infections such as cryptococcal meningitis, where complementary mechanisms can improve fungal clearance. Its use requires careful monitoring because resistance may develop rapidly, and reduced blood cell counts or liver toxicity can occur, making pharmacological supervision important in immunocompromised patients.
