Blood Sample Storage

Blood sample storage is the controlled preservation of whole blood, plasma, serum, or blood cells after collection to maintain their physical, biochemical, and immunological properties. Storage conditions such as temperature, anticoagulant selection, processing time, light exposure, and freeze-thaw cycles influence cell viability, protein stability, and the integrity of microbial or host biomarkers. In immunology and infection research, standardized handling supports reliable analysis of antibodies, cytokines, immune-cell populations, nucleic acids, and pathogen-associated signals. Careful labeling, aliquoting, and monitoring reduce variation and prevent sample degradation, improving reproducibility in diagnostics, epidemiological studies, clinical investigations, and biobanking.

A schema is a mental framework that helps individuals organize and interpret information. Schemata, formed from previous experiences, influence how we process new information: how we encode it, the inferences we make, and how we retrieve it. For instance, a schema for what a typical classroom looks like might include desks, a teacher's desk, a whiteboard, and students in such an environment. This expectation helps us quickly understand and navigate new classrooms without needing to analyze each...

This protocol aims to preserve cell metabolites for single-cell mass spectrometry (SCMS) by combining volatile salt solution washing, rapid liquid nitrogen quenching, freeze-drying, and −8 °C storage. It demonstrates that liquid nitrogen quenching is essential for maintaining metabolite profiles, while prolonged cold storage should be minimized to prevent metabolic alterations.
