Lesion Scoring

Lesion scoring is a standardized method for assessing the presence, extent, and severity of visible or microscopic tissue abnormalities, providing a reproducible measure of disease or injury. In immunology and infection research, investigators assign grades using predefined criteria such as lesion number, size, inflammation, ulceration, necrosis, or tissue damage, often by examining clinical findings, gross pathology, or histological sections. These scores convert complex pathological changes into analyzable data for comparing experimental groups, tracking disease progression, and evaluating immune responses or treatment effects. Consistent scoring improves study reproducibility and helps connect pathogen burden and host inflammation with functional and clinical outcomes.

Introduction to z Scores

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...

We developed a method to successfully remove, process, section, and stain, for histopathological evaluation, mammary tissue that had originally been fixed on slides as whole mounts. This method may promote the collection and evaluation of mammary gland whole mounts in reproductive and developmental test guideline studies.
