Mouse Oral Surgery

Mouse oral surgery is the controlled surgical manipulation of oral tissues in mice, providing an experimental model for studying local immunity, infection, and tissue repair. Typically performed under anesthesia with sterile instruments, the procedure may involve access to the teeth, gums, mucosa, or jaw to produce a defined intervention or injury while limiting unrelated variables. Researchers use these models to examine inflammatory responses, microbial colonization, wound healing, and interactions between oral tissues and the immune system. Careful standardization of surgical technique, postoperative monitoring, and infection control improves reproducibility and helps connect tissue-level findings with broader mechanisms of disease.

Oral Delivery of Transformed Yeast Cells into the Mouse Intestinal Immune System

2025

This video showcases the oral administration of transformed yeast cells into a mouse model. The transformed yeast cells are orally administered using a gavage technique, reaching the mouse's stomach. Later, the cells migrate to the small intestine, where microfold cells engulf them and facilitate their transfer to Peyer's patches and gain access to the intestinal immune system.

2025

This video demonstrates an assay to evaluate the effectiveness of oral combined antiretroviral therapy (oral cART) in a human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1)-infected humanized mouse model. A combination of drugs targeting HIV-1, including nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and integrase strand transfer inhibitors, is administered along with a nutritional supplement and antibiotics. Following the consumption of this mixture by the humanized mice infected with HIV-1, the effective...

Utilizing an Orally Dissolving Strip for Pharmacological and Toxicological Studies: A Simple and Humane Alternative to Oral Gavage for Animals

2016

The following protocol describes a novel method for chronic oral drug administration using an orally dissolving strip (ODS) in lieu of the more commonly used oral gavage method. We demonstrate that preclinical, oral drug delivery using the ODS method represents a safe, convenient, and humane alternative to oral gavage.

2011

A comprehensive overview of the techniques involved in generating a mouse model of oral cancer and quantitative monitoring of tumor invasion within the tongue through multi-photon microscopy of labeled cells is presented. This system can serve as a useful platform for the molecular assessment and drug efficacy of anti-invasive compounds.
