Zone Of Clearance

Zone of clearance is a visibly transparent region in a bacterial lawn where bacterial cells have been removed or destroyed, providing a readout of antimicrobial or bacteriophage activity. In infection studies, lytic bacteriophages infect susceptible bacteria embedded in soft agar, replicate inside host cells, and release progeny through cell lysis; repeated infection and lysis produce an expanding clear zone, or plaque. These zones help researchers estimate phage concentration as plaque-forming units, compare host susceptibility, evaluate antibacterial effects, and select candidates for phage-based approaches to controlling bacterial infection.

Hepatic Drug Clearance: Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clearance

2025

Hepatic clearance refers to the volume of blood cleared of a drug by the liver per unit of time. It plays a crucial role in drug metabolism and elimination. While hepatic clearance is commonly estimated by subtracting renal clearance from total body clearance, other pathways, such as pulmonary or biliary clearance, may also contribute. However, these pathways are generally less significant than hepatic and renal clearance. Most drugs undergo restrictive clearance, which is proportional to the...

We demonstrate a minimally invasive technique referred to as neonatal subventricular zone electroporation. The technique consists of injecting plasmid DNA into the lateral ventricles of neonatal pups and applying electrical current to deliver and genetically manipulate neural stem...

Zones of Protection

In power systems, the entire setup is divided into protective zones to isolate faults and protect the rest of the network. These zones include generators, transformers, buses, transmission lines, distribution lines, and motors. Each zone can be visualized as a separate room in a house, with each room protected by its own circuit breaker. Protective zones are defined by closed dashed lines, containing one or more components. A key characteristic of these zones is the strategic placement of...

Transition Zone

The transition zone in concrete is a critical area where aggregate meets cement paste, marked by a distinct porosity and weakness compared to the surrounding material. The adhesion around the aggregates is primarily due to Van Der Waals forces. The voids within this zone influence its robustness; initially, it is less durable than the surrounding bulk mortar due to larger voids. Initially, when concrete is compacted, a higher water-cement ratio near the aggregates leads to the formation of...

Hybrid Zones

2026

Hybrid zones are narrow regions where two closely related species interact, mate, and produce hybrids. Relative to either parent species, hybrids may possess distinct phenotypic or genetic differences that impact their survival and reproductive success. The genetic variances introduced by hybridization influence species diversity and speciation processes within the hybrid zone.Gene flow and natural selection are evolutionary mechanisms that shape the outcome of a hybrid zone. Gene flow...
