Initial Deposit

In macroeconomics, an initial deposit is the first amount placed into a commercial bank, serving as the starting point for analyzing how banking activity can expand the money supply. When the bank retains a required fraction as reserves and lends the remainder, recipients may deposit those funds into other banks, allowing successive rounds of lending and redepositing under a fractional-reserve model. The potential expansion is summarized by the simple deposit multiplier, often expressed as 1 divided by the reserve requirement, although actual outcomes depend on banks’ lending decisions, borrowers’ demand, and cash holdings. Initial deposits therefore help examine money creation, monetary policy transmission, liquidity, and broader economic activity.
