Radial Thickness

Radial thickness is the distance measured outward from an object's inner radius to its outer radius, providing a mathematical description of the width of a circular layer, annulus, or hollow component. For a region with inner radius r and outer radius R, the radial thickness is t = R − r, while its geometry can also be described through the difference between the corresponding circumferences or areas. This concept supports calculations involving annuli, pipes, shells, and concentric structures, helping researchers model dimensions, compare layered geometries, and analyze how changes in radius affect volume, surface area, or structural proportions.

Radial System Protection

Radial systems employ time-delay overcurrent relays to reduce load interruptions. When a fault occurs, the nearest breaker opens first, while upstream breakers remain closed due to longer delay settings. This approach ensures minimal disruption to the rest of the system. In a radial system with a fault downstream of the third breaker, ideally, only the third breaker will open, isolating the fault and interrupting the load connected beyond it. The second breaker has a longer delay setting,...

Evaluating Motor Impairment in C. elegans Models Using the Radial Locomotion Assay

This video demonstrates the use of a radial locomotion assay to evaluate motor dysfunction in C. elegans expressing either wild-type or ALS-mutant human TDP-43 protein. Worms with varying levels of wild-type or mutant TDP-43 expression are allowed to crawl, and their movement is measured by the radial distance traveled from the central point on the assay plate. The assay distinguishes between mild, moderate, and severe motor impairments based on the distance traveled by the different C. elegans...
