Square Root Domain

The square root domain is the set of input values for which a square-root expression is defined, typically within the real numbers. Because the square root of a real number exists only when its radicand is nonnegative, finding the domain requires setting the radicand greater than or equal to zero and solving the resulting inequality; additional restrictions apply when the expression includes denominators or other operations. This concept helps determine valid inputs, graph functions accurately, simplify algebraic models, and analyze equations and inequalities. Understanding square root domains also supports later work with inverse functions, transformations, and mathematical modeling.

Root Mean Square

If in an experiment, data values have a probability of being both positive and negative, neither the arithmetic mean, the geometric mean, nor the harmonic mean can be used to calculate the central tendency of the data set. In particular, if the positive and negative values are equally likely, the arithmetic mean is close to zero. For example, consider the velocity of gas molecules in a container. The gas molecules are moving in different directions, which might impart positive and negative...

Perfect Square Trinomial: Square of a Difference

A perfect square trinomial involving subtraction can be understood through a geometric model. Consider a square sheet of glass with a side length of a. A technician wants to create a smaller square by trimming a strip of width b from two adjacent sides. Each strip removed from the original sheet is a rectangle with dimensions a and b, so each strip has area ab. Removing two such strips decreases the original area by twice this amount. However, the two strips overlap at one corner. This...

Perfect Square Trinomial: Square of a Sum

A perfect square trinomial can be understood by examining how the area of a square changes when its side length is increased. Consider an engineer designing a square solar panel array with a side length of a. The original array forms a square whose area equals the side length squared. As energy demand increases, the engineer expands the array by b units along two adjacent edges, creating a larger square with a side length of a + b.The enlarged array can be divided into four regions. The...

Conservation of Protein Domains Over Different Proteins

2020

Protein domains are small structurally independent units that are part of a single amino acid chain. Although these domains are often structurally independent, they may rely on synergistic effects to perform their functions as part of a larger protein. Protein domains may be conserved within the same organism, as well as across different organisms. A limited set of protein domains often duplicate and recombine during evolution. These domains can be organized in different combinations to form...

Punnett Squares

A Punnett square displays the possible genotypes offspring can inherit from two parental genotypes. If a trait’s inheritance pattern (e.g., dominant or recessive) is known, Punnett squares can also be used to determine the probability of inheriting a phenotype. Punnett squares are applicable in situations where trait inheritance is determined by a single gene locus and traits are independently inherited. However, they cannot predict trait probabilities for more complex genetic inheritance...
