Compensatory Gaze Behavior

Compensatory gaze behavior is the adjustment of eye position, head posture, or visual fixation that helps maintain a stable image when normal eye or vestibular function is disrupted. The nervous system uses visual and vestibular feedback to coordinate fixation, eye movements, and head movements, allowing a person to reduce retinal image motion and preserve visual orientation during movement. In medicine, evaluating these behaviors can help identify abnormalities such as nystagmus, impaired vestibulo-ocular responses, or ocular-motor dysfunction. Their assessment also supports diagnosis, monitoring, and rehabilitation by showing how patients adapt to deficits affecting balance, spatial orientation, and visual stability.

2014

Mouse models have become increasingly popular in studies of behavioral neuroscience. As models advance, it is important to develop sensitive behavioral measures specific to the mouse. This protocol describes the Pasta Matrix Reaching Task, which is a skilled motor task for use in mouse models of stroke.

The purpose of this protocol is to demonstrate the techniques for measuring compensatory responses to reduced central blood volume using lower body negative pressure as a noninvasive experimental model of human hemorrhage which can be used to quantify the total integration of compensatory mechanisms to blood volume deficit in humans.

A Gaze-Contingent Display Framework for Perceptual Learning Research with Simulated Central Vision Loss

We present development of a gaze-contingent display framework designed for perceptual and oculomotor research simulating central vision loss. This framework is particularly adaptable for studying compensatory behavioral and oculomotor strategies in individuals experiencing both simulated and pathological central vision loss.

Patients with visual deficits after stroke report about different constraints in daily life most likely due to variable compensatory strategies, which are difficult to differentiate in clinical routine. We present a clinical set-up which allows measurement of different compensatory head- and eye-movement-strategies and evaluating their effects on driving performance.
