Conscious Mouse Testing

Conscious mouse testing is the study of drug effects, physiology, behavior, or disease-related responses in awake mice, rather than animals rendered unconscious by anesthesia, making it useful for assessing integrated biological function. In these studies, researchers administer an intervention and measure observable outcomes such as movement, behavior, physiological signs, or responses to a controlled stimulus while the animal remains conscious, allowing neural, sensory, and systemic processes to interact. This approach supports preclinical evaluation of medicines, while helping investigators identify treatment effects, adverse responses, and clinically relevant changes that anesthesia could mask.

An EEG experimental protocol is designed to clarify the interplay between conscious and non-conscious representations of emotional faces in patients with Asperger's syndrome. The technique suggests that patients with Asperger's syndrome have deficits in non-conscious representation of emotional faces, but have comparable performance in conscious representation with healthy controls.

The hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp, or insulin clamp, is the gold standard for assessing insulin action in vivo. A method for performing insulin clamps in mice is described. This includes a method for arterial catheterization that permits experiments to be performed in conscious, unrestrained mice with minimal stress.

Fundamental, yet unique properties of the rodent olfactory system have led to its increasing study among biologists. A relatively simple assessment of its function is then also needed. Here we describe sensitive tests for the characterization of mouse olfactory sensitivity and preference.

Understanding Consciousness

2024

Consciousness can be defined as the state of being aware of and able to think about one's existence, sensations, and surroundings. It encompasses two major components: awareness and arousal. Awareness pertains to the recognition of environmental stimuli and internal states. At the same time, arousal refers to the physiological readiness to engage with these stimuli, which varies significantly between states like sleep and wakefulness. Sleep, a crucial state, is characterized by reduced physical...
