Copd Insomnia

COPD-associated insomnia is a sleep disturbance occurring in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), in which difficulty initiating or maintaining sleep can compound respiratory and daytime problems. Airflow limitation, nighttime breathlessness, cough, hypoxemia, medication effects, and anxiety may disrupt sleep, while fragmented sleep can worsen fatigue and reduce perceived quality of life. Clinical assessment distinguishes insomnia from other sleep disorders and evaluates respiratory symptoms, sleep patterns, medications, and coexisting conditions to guide treatment. Recognizing this interaction supports integrated care, including optimization of COPD management and targeted insomnia interventions, and may improve sleep, functioning, and overall disease management.
