Epitympanum

The epitympanum, or tympanic attic, is the upper portion of the middle-ear cavity located above the tympanic membrane, and it is important for understanding sound transmission and middle-ear disease. This air-filled space houses the head of the malleus and much of the incus, allowing these ossicles to transmit vibrations from the eardrum toward the stapes; it also communicates posteriorly with the mastoid antrum through the aditus ad antrum. In medicine, knowledge of the epitympanum supports interpretation of temporal-bone imaging, evaluation of chronic otitis media and cholesteatoma, and planning of otologic procedures that preserve hearing while removing diseased tissue.
