Learning Outcome Statements

Learning outcome statements are clear, observable descriptions of what a learner should know, understand, or be able to do after an educational experience. In medicine, they translate curriculum goals into assessable capabilities by specifying an action, the relevant clinical knowledge or skill, and the conditions or standard expected for performance. Educators use them to align teaching activities, formative feedback, and assessment with competencies such as history taking, clinical reasoning, communication, and patient safety. Well-written statements make expectations transparent for students and support consistent evaluation across courses, clinical placements, and professional training.
