Meibomian Gland Imaging

Meibomian gland imaging is a noninvasive method for visualizing the structure and distribution of the meibomian glands in the eyelids, supporting assessment of gland health and evaporative dry eye disease. In infrared meibography, specialized cameras illuminate the eyelid and record the glands as contrasting structures beneath the tarsal plate, allowing clinicians to identify gland dropout, shortening, distortion, or obstruction. These images complement symptom assessments and tear-film evaluation, help characterize meibomian gland dysfunction, guide treatment planning, and provide objective measures for monitoring disease progression and response to therapy.
