Open Laparotomy

Open laparotomy is a surgical procedure that creates a deliberate incision through the abdominal wall to access the peritoneal cavity, enabling direct examination or treatment of abdominal organs. Surgeons typically open the abdominal layers through a midline or transverse incision, use retractors to maintain exposure, and then inspect, repair, remove, or control affected tissues before closing the wound in layers. It may be performed for trauma, suspected intra-abdominal disease, obstruction, bleeding, infection, or procedures that cannot be completed safely through minimally invasive approaches. Understanding its anatomy, operative steps, and risks is essential for surgical training and perioperative patient care.
