Operational Management

Operational management is the coordination of people, processes, resources, and performance to deliver services efficiently and consistently. In medicine, it works by matching staffing, equipment, facilities, and clinical workflows with patient demand, while monitoring measures such as capacity, waiting time, safety, and quality to guide corrective action. Hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and public health organizations use operational management to streamline scheduling, patient flow, supply chains, and communication across care teams. Effective practice can improve access, reduce delays and waste, support safer care, and strengthen an organization’s ability to respond to changing clinical needs.

2025

Patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction who remain symptomatic despite optimal medical therapy may undergo a septal myectomy (Morrow procedure). This procedure involves excising a portion of the hypertrophied septum below the aortic valve using a heart-lung machine to improve blood flow through the LVOT. Effective preoperative and postoperative nursing management ensures successful patient outcomes, minimizes complications, and...

Robert M Rioux, Ajay Sathe, Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA A glovebox is an isolated enclosure that is designed to maintain an inert atmosphere. The manipulation of chemicals or apparatus is done via the use of gloves, which allow operation while still maintaining an inert atmosphere. A positive pressure is utilized to compensate for any passive leaks. Objects can be transferred in and out of the box using an antechamber that acts as an airlock between the box...

Fermentors are used to increase culture yield and productivity of bioengineered cells. After screening multiple microbial or animal cell culture candidates in shake flasks, the next logical step is to increase the selected culture’s biomass with the fermentor. This video demonstrates the setup and operation of a typical benchtop bioreactor system.
