Osteoarthritis Outcome Score

The Osteoarthritis Outcome Score is a patient-reported outcome measure that quantifies pain, symptoms, functional limitations, and quality of life in people with osteoarthritis, supporting consistent assessment in medicine. It uses structured questions in which patients rate their experiences and difficulty performing activities, with responses combined into domain scores that can be compared across visits or treatment groups. Clinicians use the score to monitor disease burden and meaningful changes after treatment, while researchers apply it to evaluate interventions and compare patient outcomes in clinical studies. Its standardized, patient-centered approach complements physical examination and imaging when assessing osteoarthritis-related impact.

We describe a protocol for the destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) model in mice, an effective tool for osteoarthritis (OA) research. In addition, we have demonstrated that deficiency of progranulincan exaggerate OA development and progression by using this model, indicating that progranulin plays a protective role in the pathogenesis of OA.

Osteoarthritis (OA), or degenerative joint disease, is a debilitating condition associated with pain that remains only partially controlled by available analgesics. Animal models are being developed to improve our understanding of OA-related pain mechanisms. Here we describe the methodology for the monoiodoacetate model of OA pain in the mouse.

Introduction to z Scores

2023

A z score (or standardized value) is measured in units of the standard deviation. It tells you how many standard deviations the value x is above (to the right of) or below (to the left of) the mean, μ. Values of x that are larger than the mean have positive z scores, and values of x that are smaller than the mean have negative z scores. If x equals the mean, then x has a zero z score. It is important to note that the mean of the z scores is zero, and the standard deviation is one. z scores help...
