Real-world Case Records

Real-world case records are structured accounts of patients’ symptoms, medical histories, examinations, diagnostic tests, treatments, and outcomes, preserving clinical evidence from actual care. By organizing observations over time and linking interventions with responses, they help clinicians reconstruct disease progression, evaluate diagnostic reasoning, and identify factors that influence outcomes. In medicine, these records support case-based learning, quality improvement, clinical research, and evidence-informed decision-making. Carefully documented records can also reveal uncommon presentations, treatment complications, and patterns that inform future patient care while maintaining appropriate standards for privacy and ethical use.

We present a method for collecting electrocorticographic signals for research purposes from humans who are undergoing invasive epilepsy monitoring. We show how to use the BCI2000 software platform for data collection, signal processing and stimulus presentation. Specifically, we demonstrate SIGFRIED, a BCI2000-based tool for real-time functional brain mapping.

We previously developed a technique for implanting tetrode wires into the central complex of cockroach brains that allows us to monitor activity in individual units of tethered cockroaches. Here we present a modified version of that technique that allows us to also record brain activity in freely moving insects.

This protocol outlines a simple method for analyzing calcium signals in plants generated by feeding hemipteran insects, such as aphids. Arabidopsis thaliana transformed with the GFP calcium biosensor GCaMP3 allow for the real-time in vivo imaging of calcium dynamics with a high temporal and spatial resolution.
