Reflex Excitability Measurement

Reflex excitability measurement is the assessment of how readily the nervous system generates and regulates involuntary muscle responses after a sensory stimulus. Clinicians or researchers elicit a reflex, such as a tendon tap or electrically evoked response, and quantify features including response threshold, latency, amplitude, or recovery, which reflect the function of sensory pathways, spinal circuits, motor neurons, and muscles. In medicine, these measurements support neurological examination and the evaluation of altered nerve conduction, spinal cord function, neuromuscular disorders, and treatment effects. Standardized testing can also help monitor disease progression and reveal changes that may not be evident from voluntary movement alone.

The clinical evaluation of spasticity based on the Hoffmann reflex (H-reflex) and using electrical stimulation of peripheral nerves is an established method. Here, we provide a protocol for a terminal and direct nerve stimulation for H-reflex quantification in the mouse forepaw.

Using TMS to Measure Motor Excitability During Action Observation

Source: Laboratories of Jonas T. Kaplan and Sarah I. Gimbel—University of Southern California Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that involves passing current through an insulated coil placed against the scalp. A brief magnetic field is created by current in the coil, and because of the physical process of induction, this leads to a current in the nearby neural tissue. Depending on the duration, frequency, and magnitude of these magnetic...

Neurodevelopmental Reflex Testing in Neonatal Rat Pups

Behavioral testing is the gold standard for determining outcomes following brain injury, and can identify the presence of developmental disabilities in infants and children. Neurodevelopmental reflexes are an early indicator of these abnormalities. A host of easily accomplished developmental reflex tests in the neonatal rodent were developed and described here.

Reflex Activity

A reflex activity is an automatic, involuntary response to specific stimuli. It is a part of our survival mechanism, designed to protect us from potential harm. For example, when a bright light suddenly shines into our eyes, we instinctively close them or look away. This is a simple reflex activity orchestrated by the nervous system without conscious thought or effort. A reflex exam is a diagnostic procedure performed by a healthcare professional to evaluate the functionality of a patient's...
