Retroperitoneal Lesion

A retroperitoneal lesion is an abnormal mass or area of tissue in the retroperitoneum, the space behind the peritoneal cavity, and it matters because its deep location can delay detection and complicate diagnosis. Such lesions may arise from retroperitoneal organs, lymphatic or vascular structures, nerves, or connective tissue, or represent metastatic disease, producing symptoms through growth, inflammation, bleeding, or compression of adjacent organs. Evaluation typically combines clinical assessment with contrast-enhanced CT or MRI to define the lesion’s origin, composition, and relationship to major vessels, followed when appropriate by image-guided biopsy. Accurate characterization helps distinguish benign from malignant disease and guides surveillance, surgery, systemic therapy, or other specialized treatment.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a significant contributor to back pain and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Numerous animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration exist. We demonstrate an ovine model of intervertebral disc degeneration, utilizing a drill bit, which achieves a consistent disc injury and reproducible level of disc degeneration.

We developed a method to successfully remove, process, section, and stain, for histopathological evaluation, mammary tissue that had originally been fixed on slides as whole mounts. This method may promote the collection and evaluation of mammary gland whole mounts in reproductive and developmental test guideline studies.

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory process. This manuscript illustrates an easy to use ex vivo model to investigate fresh carotid or coronary artery plaques. The ex vivo model allows for the investigation of potential substances on the inflammatory milieu in human atherosclerotic lesions and results can be analyzed by various methods.
