Toe Off

Toe off is the final phase of stance in the human gait cycle, when the foot leaves the ground and the body advances into swing. As the heel rises, the ankle plantarflexors generate force, the toes extend at the metatarsophalangeal joints, and pressure shifts through the forefoot until contact ends at the toes. This coordinated transition provides forward propulsion and helps maintain efficient walking. In medicine, assessing toe off through gait analysis supports the evaluation of muscle weakness, joint limitations, pain, and neurological or musculoskeletal disorders, while also informing rehabilitation strategies, orthotic design, and prosthetic development.

Muscles of the Leg that Move the Foot and Toes

2024

The human leg comprises an intricate system of muscles that facilitate the movement of feet and toes. Within this system, the muscles are categorized into the anterior, lateral, and posterior compartments, each with a unique set of muscles carrying out specific functions. Anterior Compartment The anterior compartment includes muscles that contribute to the dorsiflexion of the foot. This compartment houses the tibialis anterior, extensor hallucis longus, and extensor digitorum longus muscles.

Source: Robert E. Sallis, MD. Kaiser Permanente, Fontana, California, USA The foot is a complex structure composed of numerous bones and articulations. It provides flexibility, is the essential contact point needed for ambulation, and is uniquely suited to absorb shock. Because the foot must support the weight of the entire body, it is prone to injury and pain. When examining the foot, it is important to remove shoes and socks on both sides, so that the entire foot can be inspected and compared.

Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) procedures rely on anatomical references to localize structures not directly visible to the surgeon. This manuscript describes a combined method of plane-by-plane dissection and sectional anatomy of fresh-frozen specimens to locate the structures at risk during MIS procedures.

Records range from maintaining information on cage cards to having a detailed database with all of the relevant information on each animal. The primary component of recordkeeping is the individual identification of research animals. There are a variety of methods suitable for identifying mice and rats. This...

Modifying the Bank Erosion Hazard Index (BEHI) Protocol for Rapid Assessment of Streambank Erosion in Northeastern Ohio

Streambank erosion potential can be evaluated and ranked using David Rosgen’s Bank Erosion Hazard Index (BEHI), however this protocol has significant limitations. Here we present protocol modifications to address time constraints, allow nonprofessionals to complete accurate assessments, and account for non-alluvial stream conditions in Northeast Ohio.
