Claim Reduction

Claim reduction is the lowering of an individual’s requested or entitled payment when total claims exceed the resources available for distribution. In microeconomic allocation problems, a reduction rule compares each claimant’s demand with the available estate and determines how much of the shortfall each claimant absorbs, using principles such as proportional sharing, priority, or equal treatment. This concept is central to bankruptcy, debt settlement, and rationing models, where competing claims must be reconciled with scarcity. Analyzing claim reduction helps researchers compare fairness criteria, predict allocation outcomes, and evaluate how alternative rules distribute economic losses.
