Private Cost

Private cost is the cost of an economic activity paid or borne directly by the individual consumer or firm making the decision, making it central to microeconomic analysis of choice and resource allocation. It includes explicit payments, such as wages, materials, and fees, as well as implicit opportunity costs of resources owned by the decision-maker; across output levels, it helps determine production costs and supply decisions. Comparing private cost with external costs shows whether market prices reflect the full social cost of an activity, supporting analysis of externalities, taxation, regulation, and other responses to market failure.
