Stereotype Judgment

Stereotype judgment is the process of evaluating an individual or decision based partly on beliefs about the social group to which that person belongs, a concept relevant to microeconomics because it can shape market choices and resource allocation. It operates when decision-makers use perceived group averages or stereotypes as information about an individual’s productivity, risk, preferences, or reliability, sometimes creating statistical discrimination even without hostility. In labor, credit, education, and consumer markets, these judgments can affect hiring, wages, lending, prices, and access to opportunities, helping economists analyze unequal outcomes, incentives, and the effects of information, bias, and anti-discrimination policies.
