Humidified Airflow

Humidified airflow is the delivery of air containing controlled water vapor, a process that helps maintain airway moisture and supports normal respiratory function. By warming and saturating inspired gas, humidification reduces evaporative water loss from airway surfaces, helps preserve mucociliary clearance, and can improve comfort during assisted ventilation or prolonged oxygen delivery. In neuroscience, humidified airflow supports studies of respiratory control, sleep, and brainstem regulation of breathing by stabilizing the sensory conditions detected by airway and pulmonary receptors. It is also relevant to neurological care, where impaired consciousness, motor function, or autonomic control may increase vulnerability to airway drying and respiratory complications.

A vertical, T-maze olfactometer is described for assaying the behavioral response of arthropods. The olfactometer allows the experimenter to measure choices performed by test subjects when subjected to two potential odor fields. Both attraction to and repulsion from odorants can be measured with this device.

We developed and validated a small-footprint array of miniature chemostats built from readily available parts for low cost. Physiological and experimental evolution results were similar to larger volume chemostats. The ministat array provides a compact, inexpensive, and accessible platform for traditional chemostat experiments, functional genomics, and chemical screening applications.

Fume Hoods and Laminar Flow Cabinets

2023

Robert M. Rioux & William A. Elliott, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Fume hoods and laminar flow cabinets are engineering controls that operate under similar principles. Both use a constant flow of air to prevent contamination of the laboratory environment and its inhabitants. Fume hoods prevent hazardous substances from exiting the hood workspace, whereas laminar flow cabinets prevent contaminants from entering the cabinet workspace. Fume hoods are ventilation systems...
