Incremental Hot Plate

Incremental hot plate is a behavioral neuroscience assay that measures thermal nociception, or the detection and response to painful heat, in laboratory animals. During testing, an animal stands on a heated metal surface whose temperature increases gradually, while researchers record the temperature or latency at which it displays a nocifensive response such as paw lifting, licking, or jumping. These measurements provide an operational estimate of thermal pain sensitivity and the effects of analgesic or pain-enhancing interventions. The method supports studies of sensory processing, drug efficacy, and neural mechanisms underlying acute pain, while controlled temperature increments can improve resolution across response thresholds.

2023

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Working with extreme temperatures, both high and low, is an integral part of many laboratory operations. For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...

Source: Ricardo Mejia-Alvarez and Hussam Hikmat Jabbar, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI Hot-wire anemometers have a very short time-response, which makes them ideal to measure rapidly fluctuating phenomena such as turbulent flows. The purpose of this experiment is to demonstrate the use of hot-wire anemometry.

The Incremental Cash Flows

2026

Incremental cash flows are a critical consideration for evaluating leasing versus purchasing decisions. These include lease payments, potential tax benefits, and cost savings relative to buying. Analyzing these cash flows provides valuable insights into the financial implications of leasing and helps determine its suitability for a business.Leasing involves recurring payments that are compared against the costs and benefits of ownership, such as maintenance expenses and tax advantages like...

Hot Weather Concreting

2024

Concreting at elevated temperatures accelerates the hydration process, leading to quicker setting but potentially reducing the long-term strength of the concrete structure. Additionally, low air humidity fosters rapid moisture loss from the concrete, resulting in reduced workability, pronounced plastic shrinkage, and a higher likelihood of crazing. Mitigating the heat increase in concrete can be economically achieved by shading aggregate stockpiles to prevent heating from solar radiation,...

We present a protocol to use 3D-printed mounts to fix increment cores in the field without the necessity of unpacking and gluing them on wooden mounts. The new GSC holder allows placing the cores in a core microtome to cut their surface and directly transfer them to digital image capturing.
