Incubator Environmental Control

Incubator environmental control is the regulation of temperature, carbon dioxide, humidity, and, when required, oxygen within a chamber to maintain stable conditions for biological samples. Sensors continuously monitor these variables, while heating systems, gas delivery, humidification, and feedback controllers adjust the chamber toward defined set points and limit fluctuations. In neuroscience, this control supports the survival and physiological stability of cultured neurons, glial cells, brain slices, and neural organoids during experiments. Consistent conditions improve reproducibility by reducing environmental stress and helping researchers distinguish biological responses from changes caused by temperature, gas composition, or moisture.

A method is discussed by which the in vivo mechanical behavior of stimuli-responsive materials is monitored as a function of time. Samples are tested ex vivo using a microtensile tester with environmental controls to simulate the physiological environment. This work further promotes understanding the in vivo behavior of our material.

A General Method for Evaluating Incubation of Sucrose Craving in Rats

Responding for food or drug-paired cues increases over the course of a period of abstinence and this may relate to an increased susceptibility to relapse behaviors. Here we detail a procedure for evaluating this "incubation of craving" in rats that have self-administered sucrose.

Laboratory soil warming experiments usually employ two or more constant temperatures in multiple chambers. By presenting a sophisticated environmental chamber, we provide an accurate temperature control method to imitate the magnitude and amplitude of in situ soil temperature and improve the experimental design of soil incubation studies.
