Mismatch Negativity

Mismatch negativity is an auditory event-related brain response that signals when an infrequent sound differs from a repeated auditory pattern, providing a window into automatic sensory processing. Measured primarily with electroencephalography or magnetoencephalography, it emerges roughly 100–250 milliseconds after a deviant stimulus and reflects the comparison of incoming sounds with a short-term auditory memory trace, often without conscious attention. In neuroscience, mismatch negativity helps investigators study auditory discrimination, prediction, and preattentive processing. Its altered amplitude or timing can also inform research on language and communication, schizophrenia, hearing function, and other conditions affecting sensory and cognitive processing.

Organisms are capable of detecting and fixing nucleotide mismatches that occur during DNA replication. This sophisticated process requires identifying the new strand and replacing the erroneous bases with correct nucleotides. Negative Externalities

2025

A negative externality occurs when an economic transaction imposes unintended costs on third parties who are not directly involved in the market transaction. These external costs are not captured in the market price. Negative Externalities and Market Failure Consider a chemical manufacturing plant that produces industrial chemicals for sale. The plant's private costs include raw materials, labor, equipment, and maintenance, which are reflected in the market price of the chemicals. However,...
