Motive Phosphenes

Motive phosphenes are visual sensations, such as flashes, patterns, or streaks, that occur without light entering the eye and are associated with eye movement. They arise when movement mechanically deforms or stimulates the retina, activating retinal neurons and visual pathways as though an external visual stimulus were present. In neuroscience, motive phosphenes provide a way to investigate retinal function, neural encoding, and the relationship between eye motion and visual perception. Studying these internally generated signals also helps distinguish retinal and cortical contributions to visual experience and informs research on visual disorders and sensory processing.
