Pen Membrane Slides

PEN membrane slides are microscope slides coated with a thin, transparent polyethylene naphthalate membrane that supports tissue sections during laser capture microdissection. In neuroscience, tissue is mounted on the membrane, stained or labeled to reveal anatomical regions, and a focused laser cuts around selected cells or structures so the membrane-bound material can be collected for downstream analysis. This approach enables region-specific extraction of nucleic acids, proteins, or other molecular content while preserving spatial context from brain tissue. PEN membrane slides therefore support studies of neural circuits, cellular heterogeneity, disease-associated changes, and molecular differences between precisely defined nervous-system regions.

Design Example: Designing Water Slide

2025

When designing a water slide, controlling the speed of water flow is crucial for rider safety while maintaining an exciting experience. As water flows down the slide, gravity causes it to accelerate, with its speed at the bottom depending on the height from which it starts. The higher the slide, the more potential energy the water has at the top, which is converted into kinetic energy as it descends, increasing its speed. Bernoulli's principle determines the water's velocity along the slide.

The abiotic portion includes inorganic particles ranging in size and shape that determine the soil’s texture. The biotic portion incorporates plant residues, roots, organic matter, and microorganisms. Soil microbe abundance and diversity is expansive, as...
