Polymer Microbead Fabrication

Polymer microbead fabrication is the production of uniform, spherical polymer particles whose size, composition, and surface properties can be tailored for scientific and biomedical use. Typically, a polymer solution is dispersed as droplets in an immiscible liquid, stabilized with a surfactant, and solidified through solvent evaporation, precipitation, or chemical crosslinking. In neuroscience, these microbeads can serve as carriers for drugs, growth factors, or other bioactive molecules, while also providing defined surfaces or three-dimensional environments for neural cells. Controlling bead diameter, porosity, and degradation rate helps regulate cargo release, cell interactions, and compatibility with neural tissue engineering and disease-modeling applications.

Fabrication of Amyloid-Beta-Releasing Polymer Microbeads for Modeling Alzheimer's Disease

2025

This video demonstrates a method for fabricating polymer microbeads that encapsulate neurotoxic amyloid-beta-secreting cells. The cell-polymer suspension is processed through a microbead fabrication device, with polymer gelation achieved via calcium cross-linking, forming spherical microbeads around the cells. The polymer allows cell proliferation while allowing controlled, long-term amyloid-beta release, simulating its accumulation in Alzheimer's disease.

We describe a method for the fabrication of large-area (up to 13 cm diameter) and ultrathin (as thin as 8 nm) polymer films. Instead of using a sacrificial interlayer to delaminate the film from its substrate, we use a self-limiting surface treatment suitable for arbitrarily large areas.

The zebrafish is an excellent model system for genetic and developmental studies. Bead implantation is a valuable tissue manipulation technique that can be used to interrogate developmental mechanisms by introducing alterations in local cellular environments. This protocol describes how to perform microbead implantation in the zebrafish embryo.

We develop and characterize a disordered polymer optical fiber that uses transverse Anderson localization as a novel waveguiding mechanism. This microstructured fiber can transport a small localized beam with a radius that is comparable to the beam radius of conventional optical fibers.
