Posterior Lumbar Fixation

Posterior lumbar fixation is a spinal stabilization technique that uses implants placed through a posterior approach to support the lumbar vertebrae and protect spinal alignment. Surgeons typically anchor pedicle screws into selected vertebrae and connect them with rods, limiting excessive motion while bone healing or spinal fusion occurs. The procedure can help treat vertebral instability, fractures, deformities, and degenerative conditions that cause pain or compromise neural structures. In neuroscience and spine research, posterior lumbar fixation provides a framework for studying mechanical effects on the spinal cord and nerve roots, evaluating surgical outcomes, and improving implant design and rehabilitation strategies.

In this video, we describe the surgical procedure to induce lumbar spine instability in a mouse model by resecting the Lumbar L3 to L5 spinous process along with supraspinous and interspinous ligaments.

Intrathecal Placement of Lumbar Drain: A Technique to Withdraw Cerebrospinal Fluid from the Lumbar Spine in Porcine Model

This video describes the technique of intrathecal placement of a lumbar drain in a porcine ischemic model, which helps in draining the cerebrospinal fluid to a drainage system. The cerebrospinal fluid pressure is monitored by the drainage system, and fluid is drained to maintain a constant cerebrospinal fluid pressure.

Two basic types of preparation are used to visualize specimens with a light microscope: wet mounts and fixed specimens. The simplest type of preparation is the wet mount, in which the specimen is placed in a drop of liquid on the slide. A liquid specimen can be directly deposited on the slide using a dropper. Solid specimens, such as skin scraping, can be placed on the slide before adding a drop of liquid to prepare the wet mount. Sometimes the liquid is simply water, but stains are often added...

Ovine Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Degeneration Model Utilizing a Lateral Retroperitoneal Drill Bit Injury

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a significant contributor to back pain and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Numerous animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration exist. We demonstrate an ovine model of intervertebral disc degeneration, utilizing a drill bit, which achieves a consistent disc injury and reproducible level of disc degeneration.
