Regional Comparison

Regional comparison is a systematic method for identifying similarities and differences among spatially distinct biological or anatomical regions, making it useful for linking location to function. In neuroscience, researchers compare brain regions by measuring features such as cellular composition, connectivity, gene expression, or neural activity under matched conditions. Standardized sampling, imaging, electrophysiology, and statistical normalization help separate true regional effects from variation caused by subjects, measurement methods, or experimental conditions. These comparisons clarify functional specialization, reveal circuit-level changes associated with development or disease, and guide the interpretation of maps of brain structure and activity.

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

2020

According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

Comparison Tests

An infinite series composed of positive terms may either approach a finite value or increase without bound. Determining which outcome occurs is a central task in calculus, and comparison tests provide structured methods for making this determination. Rather than evaluating a series directly, these tests relate it to another series whose behavior is already known, allowing conclusions to be drawn through logical comparison. The direct comparison test applies to series with positive terms. If each...

IR Frequency Region: Fingerprint Region

2024

IR spectra are divided into two main regions: the diagnostic region and the fingerprint region. The diagnostic region of the spectrum lies above 1500 cm−1. The absorptions resulting from single-bond vibrations of the N–H, C–H, and O–H stretch at higher wavenumbers and appear on the left side of the spectrum. The stretching absorptions of the C≡C and C≡N occur between 2100–2300 cm−1. In contrast, those arising from stretching absorptions of the C=O, C=N, and C=C occur between 1600–1850 cm−1. The...

The Eukaryotic Promoter Region

The eukaryotic promoter region is a segment of DNA located upstream of a gene. It contains an RNA polymerase binding site, a transcription start site, and several cis-regulatory sequences. The proximal promoter region is located in the vicinity of the gene and has cis-regulatory sequences and the core promoter. The core promoter is the binding site for RNA polymerase and is usually located between -35 and +35 nucleotides from the transcription start site. The distal promoter regions are...

Year-over-Year Comparison of Balance Sheet

A year-over-year (YoY) balance sheet comparison is a crucial financial analysis method that helps evaluate a company's financial position and performance over a period of time. It involves comparing the balance sheet of the current year with that of the previous year to track changes in key financial components such as assets, liabilities, and shareholders’ equity. For businesses, YoY comparisons provide insight into long-term trends, bypassing the noise of seasonal variations or short-term...
