Spatial Resolution 20 Microns

Spatial resolution of 20 microns describes the ability of an imaging or measurement system to distinguish neural structures separated by approximately 20 micrometers. In neuroscience, this resolution depends on factors such as optics, detector performance, signal contrast, and sampling, which together determine whether nearby cells, tissue boundaries, or subcellular features appear as distinct structures. A 20-micron scale can support mapping cell organization and anatomical patterns in nervous tissue, while also defining the level of detail available for quantitative analysis. Understanding this limit helps researchers select appropriate imaging methods, interpret measurements accurately, and relate observed structures to neural function and disease.

We used synchrotron X-ray tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) to non-invasively produce 3D tomographic datasets with a pixel-resolution of 0.7µm. Using volume rendering software, this allows the reconstruction of internal structures in their natural state without the artefacts produced by histological sectioning.

Spatial Cueing

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Attention refers to the limited human ability to select some information for processing at the expense of other stimuli in the environment. Attention operates in all sensory modalities: vision, hearing, touch, even taste and smell. It is most often studied in the visual domain though. A common way to study visual attention is with a spatial cueing paradigm. This paradigm allows researchers to measure the consequences of focusing...
