Water Tank Test

The Water Tank Test is a behavioral neuroscience assay used to assess spatial learning, memory, and navigation in rodents by measuring how they locate an escape platform in a pool. During training, an animal swims in a circular tank containing a submerged platform, using visual and spatial cues to learn its location; escape latency and path length typically track acquisition, while a probe trial without the platform tests memory for the learned location. Researchers use this paradigm to study hippocampal function and detect cognitive changes associated with brain injury, neurological disease, aging, or experimental treatments, while accounting for swimming ability and motivation.

2023

The article describes a behavioral method to assess stress in zebrafish. In response to stress, zebrafish tends to swim at bottom of a tank until stress is removed. The sample protocol describes stepwise method for performing the assay.

Here, we present a comprehensive behavioral test battery, including the novel tank, Shoaling, and social preference tests, to effectively determine the potential neurotoxic effects of chemicals (e.g., methamphetamine and glyphosate) on adult zebrafish using a single tank. This method is relevant to neurotoxicity and environmental research.

Capturing Flow-weighted Water and Suspended Particulates from Agricultural Canals During Drainage Events

States of Water

Water exists in any one of the three classical states: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (steam or water vapor). The state of water depends on i) the intermolecular forces that draw molecules together and ii) the kinetic energy that leads to movements that pull them apart. Water freezes when the intermolecular forces are greater than the kinetic energy. Unlike most other substances, water is less dense in its solid state than in its liquid state. This is because each water molecule can form...
