Gastrointestinal Motility

Gastrointestinal motility is the coordinated movement of contents through the digestive tract, supporting mechanical digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste elimination. It depends on rhythmic contractions of gastrointestinal smooth muscle, regulated by the enteric nervous system, autonomic inputs, pacemaker activity, and chemical signals that organize patterns such as peristalsis and segmentation. In pharmacology, studying gastrointestinal motility helps explain how prokinetic drugs enhance transit, antidiarrheal agents slow intestinal movement, and other medicines influence nausea, constipation, or functional motility disorders. Understanding these mechanisms supports the development and safe use of treatments that modify digestive function while limiting adverse effects.

This article describes a video imaging technique and high-resolution spatiotemporal mapping to identify changes in the neural regulation of colonic motility in adult mice. Subtle effects on gastrointestinal (GI) function can be detected using this approach in isolated tissue preparations to advance our understanding of GI disease.

Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders

2024

Gastrointestinal or GI motility disorders are characterized by irregular gastrointestinal tract movements, disrupting food transit from the mouth to the anus. They are caused by damage or dysfunction in gut muscles or nerves. These disorders can cause symptoms such as severe constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and swallowing difficulties. Disorders can affect any segment of the GI tract and range widely in severity, from common conditions like GERD to life-threatening conditions like...

Imaging Studies III: Gastrointestinal Motility Studies and Virtual Colonoscopy

This lesson explores three gastrointestinal imaging techniques: radionuclide testing, colonic transit studies, and virtual colonoscopy. Radionuclide Testing Radionuclide testing is a sophisticated medical technique for assessing gastrointestinal motility. It focuses on gastric emptying and colonic transit time. Radioactive markers track the movement of food through the digestive system, providing insights into gastrointestinal disorders. In gastric emptying studies, a meal's liquid and solid...

An Introduction to Cell Motility and Migration

2023

Cell motility and migration play important roles in both normal biology and in disease. On one hand, migration allows cells to generate complex tissues and organs during development, but on the other hand, the same mechanisms are used by tumor cells to move and spread in a process known as cancer metastasis. One of the primary cellular machineries that make cell movement possible is an intracellular network of myosin and actin molecules, together known as “actomyosin”, which creates a...
