Intravenous Injection

Intravenous injection is a method of delivering a drug or other solution directly into a vein, making it important in pharmacology when rapid, predictable systemic exposure is needed. By placing the needle within the venous lumen, the administered substance bypasses gastrointestinal absorption and first-pass hepatic metabolism, then travels through the bloodstream for distribution to tissues. Pharmacologists use intravenous injection to study dose-response relationships, pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and drug effects, while clinicians use it when precise dosing or prompt treatment is required. Because the route can produce rapid effects and offers limited opportunity to remove an administered dose, appropriate formulation, sterile technique, vascular access, and monitoring are essential.

Animal models of pediatric disease can experience early onset and aggressive disease progression. Clinically relevant therapy delivery to young mouse models can be technically difficult. This protocol describes a non-invasive intravenous injection method for newborn mice within the first two postnatal days of life.

Isolation and Intravenous Injection of Murine Bone Marrow Derived Monocytes

Here we present a protocol that generates large amounts of murine monocytes from heterogeneous bone marrow for translational applications. In comparison to others, this new method helps reduce the number of sacrificed animals and lowers costs by avoiding expensive methods such as high gradient magnetic cell separation (MACS).

Delivery of Therapeutic Agents Through Intracerebroventricular (ICV) and Intravenous (IV) Injection in Mice

This article demonstrates two very different methods of injection: 1) into the brain (intracerebroventricular) and 2) systemic (intravenous) to introduce the therapeutic agents into the central nervous system of neonatal mice.

Catheter Based Intravenous Injection of Experimental Agents: A Technique for Delivering Experimental Agents Intravenously Through Jugular Vein in Mouse Model

2025

In this video, we describe a method for implanting a catheter into the jugular vein of a mouse model through which experimental agents such as drugs and tracer dyes can be delivered intravenously in vivo. Such an arrangement when connected to other systems can also be used for monitoring hemodynamics and blood sampling.
