Iop Measurement Technique

The IOP measurement technique assesses intraocular pressure, the pressure generated by aqueous humor within the eye, and is essential for evaluating ocular health and detecting pressure-related disease. Tonometry estimates this pressure by measuring the force required to flatten a defined area of the cornea or, in rebound methods, the response of a probe contacting the corneal surface; results depend on corneal properties, calibration, and measurement conditions. In pharmacology, IOP measurement is used to evaluate drugs that alter aqueous humor production or outflow, quantify treatment effects, and support research on glaucoma therapies and other conditions involving abnormal ocular pressure.

Source: Hamna J. Qureshi and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana Here we will highlight the key similarities and differences of noninvasive blood pressure measurement techniques between humans and rodents and examine the engineering principles that govern blood pressure. The principles that govern current cuff technology to acquire systolic and diastolic pressures will also be discussed. Commercially available cuffs that connect...

Transporters in cell membranes allow differential segregation of ions across cell membranes or cell layers and play crucial roles during tissue physiology, repair and pathology. We describe the ion-selective self-referencing microelectrode that allows the measurement of specific ion fluxes at single cells and tissues in vivo.
