Phobias

Phobias are anxiety disorders characterized by persistent, excessive fear of a specific object, situation, or activity, often leading to avoidance and significant distress. Pharmacological approaches target neural signaling involved in fear and anxiety; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors increase serotonin availability by reducing its reuptake, while benzodiazepines enhance gamma-aminobutyric acid activity to produce short-term anxiolytic effects. Medication use varies by phobia type, with exposure-based therapy often central to treatment, particularly for specific phobias. Understanding drug mechanisms, benefits, and limitations helps guide treatment for social anxiety and related conditions while supporting research into fear learning, avoidance, and more precise interventions.

Preparedness and Phobias

2024

Human fear responses to certain stimuli, such as darkness, heights, deep water, and blood, can often arise despite the absence of direct negative experiences. This phenomenon is rooted in evolutionary psychology, which posits that humans have developed a predisposition to fear stimuli that historically posed significant survival threats. This predisposition, known as preparedness, suggests that early humans who developed a fear of potentially dangerous entities, such as venomous snakes and...

The Attentional Blink

2023

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University In order for recognition of a certain stimulus to take place, visual attention needs to be directed towards said stimulus. To the earliest parts of the visual system, objects are not objects, they are collections of visual features-lines, corners, changes in texture, color, and light. Attention is the resource that is necessary for later processing in order to recognize what a given bundle of features adds up to. This makes...

Anxiety Testing

2023

Anxiety is a commonly observed behavioral disorder that stems from fear. It is described as increased restlessness, or unpleasant feelings of fear over anticipated events. Experimenters often use rodent models to better understand anxiety disorders in humans. They use different paradigms, like exposing rodents to bright spaces or loud sounds, which are known to induce fear. These tests combined with other interventions such as surgery or drug-administration may assist researchers in pinpointing...

This protocol describes the 5-choice serial reaction time task, which is an operant based task used to study attention and impulse control in rodents. Test day challenges, which are modifications of the standard task, increase flexibility of the task and can be combined with other manipulations to more fully characterize behavior.
