Airplane Landing Example

An airplane landing example is a physics-based analysis of how an aircraft reduces speed, loses altitude, and reaches the runway safely, illustrating the interaction of forces in motion. During descent, pilots adjust thrust and angle of attack so lift supports the aircraft while drag increases and weight pulls it downward; after touchdown, wheel braking, tire friction, spoilers, and reverse thrust convert kinetic energy and slow the airplane. Studying this process applies Newton’s laws, energy conservation, and kinematic principles to a real transportation system. It helps students connect force diagrams and motion equations with aircraft design, runway requirements, and operational safety.

The Colonization of Land

2026

Changes in the environment of the early Earth drove the evolution of organisms. As prokaryotic organisms in the oceans began to photosynthesize, they produced oxygen. Eventually, oxygen saturated the oceans and entered the air, resulting in an increase in atmospheric oxygen concentration, known as the oxygen revolution approximately 2.3 billion years ago. Therefore, organisms that could use oxygen for cellular respiration had an advantage. More than 1.5 years ago, eukaryotic cells and...

2014

Soft landing of mass-selected ions onto surfaces is a powerful approach for the highly-controlled preparation of novel materials. Coupled with analysis by in situ secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), soft landing provides unprecedented insights into the interactions of well-defined species with surfaces.

Equilibrium Rent: The Market for Land

2025

The land is a critical factor of production that is supplied by landowners and rented by producers. For instance, farmers rent land to grow crops. Similarly, a restaurant owner may rent commercial building space to run the restaurant. The price for land is the rental price. Land can be bought, and in that case, the purchase price is the price paid to use that land indefinitely. However, in the current analysis, the rental price of land is used, as it presents a continuous payment similar to the...

Aerodynamic Performance of a Model Aircraft: The DC-6B

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, CA The low-speed wind tunnel is a valuable tool to study aircraft aerodynamic characteristics and evaluate aircraft performance and stability. Using a scale model of a DC-6B aircraft that has a removable tail and a 6-component external aerodynamic force balance, we can measure the lift coefficient (CL), drag coefficient (CD), pitching moment coefficient (CM), and yaw moment...

We describe a new method for counting fishes, and estimating relative abundance (MaxN) and fish density using rotating stereo-video camera systems. We also demonstrate how to use distance from camera (Z distance) to estimate species-specific detectability.
