Discharge Current

Discharge current is the flow of electric charge released when a voltage source, charged capacitor, or electrically stressed medium loses stored electrical energy. In a circuit, a potential difference drives charge through resistance, while a capacitor’s voltage and current typically decrease as charge is transferred; in gases, sufficient electric fields can ionize particles and sustain a conductive plasma channel. Measuring discharge current helps characterize energy release, resistance, breakdown behavior, and transient electrical response. These principles support the analysis of capacitor circuits, gas discharges, lightning, plasma devices, pulsed-power systems, and other processes involving rapid changes in electric charge.

RC Circuits: Discharging A Capacitor

2025

One of the applications of an RC circuit is the relaxation oscillator. The relaxation oscillator comprises a voltage source, a capacitor, a resistor, and a neon lamp. The lamp acts like an open circuit (infinite resistance) until the potential difference across the neon lamp reaches a specific voltage. At that voltage, the lamp acts like a short circuit (zero resistance), and the capacitor discharges through the neon lamp and produces light. Once the capacitor is fully discharged through the...

Electrical Current

Electrical current is defined as the rate at which charge flows. When there is a large current present, such as that used to run a refrigerator, a large amount of charge moves through the wire in a small amount of time. If the current is small, such as that used to operate a handheld calculator, a small amount of charge moves through the circuit over a long period of time. The SI unit for current is the ampere (A), named for the French physicist André-Marie Ampère (1775–1836). An ampere is the...
