Resistor Inductor

A resistor-inductor circuit combines resistance, which dissipates electrical energy as heat, with inductance, which stores energy in a magnetic field and opposes changes in current. When a voltage is applied, the resistor limits current while the inductor causes it to rise gradually; when the source is removed, the magnetic field collapses and drives current through the circuit. The current response is governed by the RL time constant, τ = L/R, which indicates how quickly the circuit approaches steady state. Resistor-inductor circuits are used to study electromagnetic transients and support filtering, current control, switching, and energy-management applications.

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment demonstrates how current is distributed in resistors connected in series or parallel, and thus describes how to calculate the total "effective" resistance. Using Ohm's law, it possible to convert between the voltage and current through a resistance, if the resistance is known. For two resistors connected in series, (meaning that they are wired one after the...

An inductor is a passive component built to store energy within its magnetic field. It can be fabricated by coiling a wire around a magnetic core. When current is permitted to flow through this inductor, it is observed that the voltage across the inductor is directly proportional to the time rate of change of the current. Mathematically, This relationship is expressed using the passive sign convention, where 'L' represents the constant of proportionality, also known as the inductance of the...

An inductor, also known as a choke, is a circuit component created to have a specific inductance. Inductors are among the crucial circuit components used in modern electronics, along with resistors and capacitors. They serve as a barrier against changes in a circuit's current. An inductor tends to suppress current changes in an alternating-current circuit that are faster than desired. In a direct-current circuit, an inductor aids in preserving a constant current despite changes in the applied...

A resistor is an ohmic device that limits the flow of charge in a circuit. Most circuits have more than one resistor. If several resistors are connected together and connected to a battery, the current supplied by the battery depends on the equivalent resistance of the circuit. The equivalent resistance of a combination of resistors depends on both their individual values and how they are connected. The simplest combination of resistors is the series combination. In a series circuit, the...

Electrical devices in any circuit can be connected either by series or parallel connections. Additionally, circuits can be connected involving both of these connections, known as combination or complex circuits. As these circuits have complex resistor connections, it is necessary to identify different parts as either series or parallel connections, then the whole combination of series and parallel resistors can be reduced to a single equivalent resistance. With the known equivalent resistance...
