Silicone Membrane Casting

Silicone membrane casting is a fabrication method for producing thin, flexible silicone sheets or films with controlled thickness and surface form. The process typically combines a silicone prepolymer with a curing agent, removes trapped air, and spreads or pours the mixture into a mold before thermal or room-temperature curing creates a crosslinked elastomeric network. In physics research, the resulting membranes provide deformable interfaces for studying elasticity, pressure-driven motion, fluid transport, and mechanical instabilities. By adjusting formulation, mold geometry, and curing conditions, researchers can tune membrane stiffness, thickness, and transparency for experimental models, sensors, and soft mechanical systems.

2025

This protocol presents an improved demolding procedure for the Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) double casting technique by introducing silicone oil as a non-adhesive barrier between PDMS layers. Unlike plasma or chemical surface modification methods, this approach requires no specialized or costly equipment, making it a more accessible and cost-effective alternative.

2026

A novel sealing protocol to produce water-tight silicone-based seals for membranes of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chip devices. Intended for labs setting-up chip models and small-scale chip platform development. We demonstrate the protocol using plastic and native tissue membranes. This procedure only requires PDMS, toluene, mold, membrane, and a vacuum chamber.
