Caregiving Practices

Caregiving practices are the behaviors and strategies used to support another person’s physical needs, emotional well-being, safety, and development. They work through responsive interactions, including observing cues, providing consistent comfort, setting appropriate boundaries, and adapting support to changing abilities and circumstances. In psychology, researchers examine how caregiving quality influences attachment, stress regulation, learning, mental health, and relationships across the lifespan. Understanding these practices informs parenting programs, clinical interventions, caregiver education, and services for children, older adults, and people with illness or disability, while also highlighting the importance of caregiver well-being and social support.
