Hypnagogic Hallucinations

Hypnagogic hallucinations are vivid sensory experiences that occur as a person transitions from wakefulness into sleep, often involving images, sounds, bodily sensations, or a sense of presence. They arise when waking perception and dream-like activity overlap during sleep onset, as changes in attention, muscle control, and brain activity unfold; unlike ordinary dreams, these experiences may feel immediate while awareness persists. In psychology and sleep research, studying hypnagogic hallucinations helps distinguish common sleep phenomena from experiences associated with narcolepsy, sleep deprivation, medications, or other conditions, improving the assessment of sleep and related perceptual events.
