Multiple Personality Disorder

Multiple personality disorder, now termed dissociative identity disorder (DID), is a mental health condition involving two or more distinct identity states and disruptions in memory, consciousness, perception, or behavior. It develops through dissociation, a process in which experiences and aspects of identity become insufficiently integrated, often in association with severe or prolonged trauma. In psychology, recognizing DID helps clinicians distinguish it from mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and ordinary shifts in behavior or self-perception. Assessment and psychotherapy focus on improving safety, reducing distress, strengthening continuity of memory and identity, and supporting cooperation or integration among identity states.
