Skepticism Open-mindedness

Skepticism and open-mindedness are complementary psychological dispositions that help people evaluate claims carefully while remaining receptive to new evidence. Skepticism prompts individuals to question assumptions, assess the quality of supporting evidence, and distinguish reliable information from unsupported conclusions; open-mindedness allows them to consider alternative explanations and revise beliefs when evidence warrants change. Together, these processes engage critical thinking, metacognition, and tolerance of uncertainty rather than reflexive acceptance or rejection. In psychology, they support sound research interpretation, clinical reasoning, scientific debate, and resistance to misinformation, while promoting more flexible judgments and better-informed decisions.

The rapid expansion of online information has increased access to knowledge while also increasing the risk of misinformation. Sources that appear authoritative may lack scholarly rigor, which makes credibility assessment a critical part of research literacy. Evaluating the reliability of information helps prevent the inclusion of weak, biased, or misleading material in academic work. Publication Source and Authorship A primary consideration is the publication source. Scholarly journals and...

Global Climate Change

2019

Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past. Past Periods of Warming and Cooling In the last...

A challenge with this type of research is that participants often have pre-existing beliefs about the treatment, particularly expectations that the treatment will work. Though it has been practiced around the world for centuries, yoga is a relatively recent fitness craze in the United States with a...
